A few days ago I saw a brief video of the CEO of Instagram describing changes to the use of the platform that echo the ‘Dark Forest of the Internet’ theory, explored in my previous column Social Media Platforms and the Dark Forest.

Adam Mosseri said, “There’s way more photos and videos posted in DMs every day than there are to stories. And there are way more photos posted to stories than the feed. But when you ask most people to think of Instagram they think of feed. It’s not the most important surface in terms of where people actually consume content.”

Before communicating in more private ways, we first need to build a place where people can go online. Following on from last week, this column is part two of a step-by-step guide to building your online presence. I have narrated this column and suggest that you listen as you continue setting up your site.
