Over the last two years I reconnected with my artistic peers and reviewed business practises in primary and secondary markets – including systematic weaknesses within the latter, exploited by unethical people within the artworld. I listened to collectors’ experiences with art shipping and transportation, art storage, art cleaning and conservation, and buying and selling art on the secondary market.
My focus is on solutions.
In addition to managing my primary market I now also oversee customised packing of artworks and worldwide delivery by globally recognised courier.
I advise that my secondary market work is bought and sold through 63 Jersey Art Sales, an initiative of Tim Olsen and Brett Ballard, named after the street address of Olsen Gallery at 63 Jersey Road in Sydney, Australia. I will not be involved in or receive any percentage of secondary market sales — except for Resale Royalty via Copyright Agency, when applicable. To ensure collectors retain choice I will still consent to copyright approval requests by auction houses, as per the terms of their agreement with Copyright Agency that I am on their list of ‘prior approval’ artists to prevent the sale of fraudulent and stolen artworks.
Tim Olsen and I have known eachother in a professional capacity for almost twenty-five years. Tim’s business practices have integrity and, as a consequence, are sustainable over the long term. He is better positioned than art auction houses to filter out unethical behaviour. Tim is respectful of women artists and his professional decisions are based on the quality of our work alone.
I strongly believe this approach will yield the best results for buyers and sellers of my work on the secondary market and – due to Tim’s understanding of building authentic value without market manipulation – for collectors who hold my work as long-term investments.
While I have not yet met Mr. Ballard, I trust Tim’s judgement: Katrina Arent, Manager of Olsen Gallery for twenty-six years, has an impeccable reputation.
Brett Ballard is former Head of Art at Menzies Art Brands, Sydney. Prior to joining Menzies, Brett held the position of Senior Specialist, Art at Sotheby’s Australia (now Smith and Singer) for ten years and was previously Gallery Manager at Rex Irwin Art Dealer, Sydney between 2003 and 2011.
Brett works closely with clients, consulting on collection management and the buying and selling of art in the secondary market and at auction. He is an experienced curator who advises on all aspects of collecting both in Australia and internationally.
In addition to representing artists and exhibiting their work, Tim Olsen has been involved in the secondary market since opening his gallery in 1993. As an example, Tim sold an artwork by Agnolo Bronzino – a Florentine court painter of the Medici – to the Art Gallery of New South Wales for $2.4 million dollars Australian. Tim also consults objectively, and with discretion, on behalf of private clients who are looking to grow or manage their collections.
An understanding of art conservation is significant in maintaining artworks as they age and, when appropriate, cleaning them before resale. Tim spent seven years at art school and university studying art and art history. Although he does not exhibit his own work, Tim is a naturally talented and technically skilled painter and printmaker, which gives him a greater understanding of the construction and conservation of artworks. In addition to other board positions, Tim has been a director on the foundation board of the University of New South Wales for over fifteen years and is dedicated to its restoration department.
I suggest that all enquiries regarding the secondary market for my work be directed to Tim Olsen and Brett Ballard via email at info@olsengallery.com or brett.ballard.art@gmail.com . Their Instagram page is @63jersey_artsales with bricks and mortar address at:
