Tutorial: pro' photos with a smartphone
Digital Strategy + Execution
In contrast to the audience’s lack of trust and interest in the contemporary artworld, there is an increasing joy in discovering art and artists online. This is a great time for individuals and collectives to share our work. However, connecting with the audience online requires skilled communication, specifically visual communication. Alongside discussing digital strategies these columns will offer tutorials in how to communicate visually using accessible digital tools, starting with publication-quality photographs.
Although I use a digital camera to document my artworks at maximum size with the intention of one day reproducing them in books, mostly this specialist piece of equipment sits in a drawer.
These days, the camera I use most is my smartphone. It’s convenient and, with simple editing, produces photographs of professional quality that can be sent to clients, used everywhere online from websites to social media and are high enough resolution to be reproduced in print.
This tutorial focuses on taking high quality photographs of artworks and objects using minimal equipment and classic editing. I’ll write separate columns about using the same digital tool to take photos of people and to film and edit videos. If you have any technical questions, please share them in the comments and I’ll answer within 24 hours.
